Oral Cancer Screenings
The American Cancer Society suggests that over 35,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. Tragically, over half of the diagnosed cases of oral cancer occur in stages three or four. This is made more tragic by the fact that delayed diagnosis is entirely unnecessary. Simple oral cancer examinations can be performed during your general dentistry visits for early detection of this increasingly common disease.
Our Littleton family dentists offer quick and effective oral cancer screening as a part of your regularly scheduled visits to our office. While oral cancer can impact anyone, these screenings are of particular importance for patients who use tobacco products, drink excessive amounts of alcohol, or have a family history of oral cancers.
If you would like to learn more about oral cancer screening or to schedule an appointment, please contact Colorado Dental Arts online or call 303.824.9436 today.
Symptoms of Oral Cancer
Cancer of the cheeks, floor or roof of the mouth, hard and soft palate, lips, tongue, sinuses, and throat can all be life-threatening when not detected early on. Symptoms that should be brought to the attention of our Littleton general dentist include:
- Swelling or lumps on any oral tissue
- White, red, or speckled sores/patches in the mouth
- Bleeding sores that do not heal within a few weeks
- Oral pain or generalized facial pain
- Neck and throat pain, including chronic sore throat
- Difficulties swallowing or moving the jaw or tongue
- Persistent ear pain
Chronic discomfort and persistent symptoms may indicate a number of oral health issues, making it best to bring any concerns to the attention of our dentists as soon as possible. Oral cancers and other serious oral health concerns can often be effectively treated when detected in their earliest stages.
