October Is National Dental Hygiene Month

The ADHA (American Dental Hygienist Association) designated October as National Dental Hygiene month and Colorado Dental Arts is happy to get in the spirit by sharing the tips recommended for our Littleton dentistry patients. Since October ends with Halloween, the timing for dental hygiene awareness couldn’t be better. The theme for this campaign is the “Daily 4”: brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing.

Brushing

Brush your teeth with the right technique to maintain the best oral health. Start by holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle. Gently brush in circular motions along every tooth, front, back, top and bottom. Don’t forget your tongue! Brush back to front, rinsing your brush with each pass to reduce bacteria.

Flossing

Floss before you brush, whenever possible. If it’s inconvenient to floss, make sure to do it at least once a day. Floss picks makes it easier when you’re on the go. The Colorado Dental Arts team wants to see gums that are firm, pink and snug around the teeth. Daily flossing helps keep your mouth this way. When you floss correctly, your gums should not hurt, nor should they bleed. If either of these things happen when you floss, it is a sign of gum disease!

To floss correctly, gently place the floss between each tooth and slowly go up and down the sides of the tooth at the gum line. The floss should make a little “C” when placed around each tooth. Flossing like this every day protects your teeth against decay and gum recession.

Rinsing

For added protection against dental decay and bad breath, use antimicrobial mouthwash daily. When that mouthwash contains fluoride, you remineralize and strengthen your enamel with every use.

Chewing

Chew sugarless gum after meals to stimulate salivary glands and neutralize acid forming bacteria in your mouth. Xylitol, a main ingredient in sugarless gum, is actually considered beneficial for teeth because it deprives oral bacteria of sugar, the food these microorganisms need to multiply. The result is fresher breath and a cleaner mouth!
