When a house is built on a solid foundation it can last for hundreds of years. Similarly, a person who cares for their mouth every day with a solid routine of dental care can expect to keep their teeth for life. How can you enjoy such good dental health and what is the foundation of routine oral hygiene?
There are three things you can do to ensure you have a healthy, problem free mouth:
- Use a clean toothbrush twice every day,
- Floss daily,
- Get an exam and cleaning every six months at Colorado Dental Arts.
While it’s impossible to completely avoid getting ill from colds and flus, using a clean toothbrush helps prevent infection from germs and bacteria. Avoid sharing toothbrushes and keep yours in a clean, dry place. Every three months, or after recovering from illness, you should change your toothbrush. It is also wise to change it if you drop it on an unsanitary surface. If someone else uses your toothbrush, you should also consider changing it. Everyone’s oral bacteria is different, and you may not want to be introduced to theirs.
Flossing Is Important
Flossing daily is key to preventing gum disease. Floss before you brush, at least once a day, to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth. Your breath will be fresh and your mouth will feel cleaner. Daily flossing along with brushing also prevents gum recession. Gum health is directly linked to how often a person flosses and when a person flosses daily the beneficial results are obvious — firm, pink gums that do not bleed easily.
